Mauricio
still works at AT&T Labs Research in Florham Park, New Jersey. His
job involves a lot of traveling, mainly for conferences or for research
collaborations.
In
February and March he traveled to attend conferences in Florida,
hosted by Panos Pardalos. In March Mauricio traveled to Pittsburgh to
give a talk at the U. of Pittsburgh, hosted by Oleg Prokopyev and
hosted Spanish colleagues Rafael Martí and Abraham Duarte to do some
research in New Jersey. Rafael’s wife, Mila Soler, also came with
them.
In April he traveled to Porto (Portugal) to work with José
Gonçalves. In Porto, Mauricio also gave a talk at INESC, hosted by
Ana Viana, who took him for cool day trip to the Douro Valley wine
region. They had a wonderful lunch at Rui Paula's DOC Restaurant.
After attending Sasha’s graduation on May 1st, Mauricio
gave a keynote talk at a conference in Montréal (Canada) and
traveled with Lucia and the kids to Brazil in May. From Rio,
Mauricio traveled to Buenos Aires to attend an operations research
conference. In Buenos Aires, he met friend Zina Katz who he had last
seen in 2003. From Buenos Aires, Mauricio returned to Rio to spend 10
days working with Celso Ribeiro. Spanish friends Rafael Martí and
Mila Soler traveled with Mauricio back to Rio from Buenos Aires and
were given a concise 3-day tour of Rio by him.

After watching
Brazil’s first FIFA World Cup match in Rio (first time since 1982
that Mauricio was in Brazil during a World Cup), Mauricio returned to
New Jersey and saw Brazil’s disappointing campaign on TV from home.
He turned his support from Brazil to Uruguay to Spain and celebrated
Spain’s win.
In July, José Gonçalves from Porto and Ricardo Silva
from Lavras (Brazil) visited to work with Mauricio. During the summer
Mauricio also hosted and worked with Pietro Oliveto, a post-doc from
the University of Birmingham (U.K.) and Rodrigo Toso, a Ph.D. student
from Rutgers University.

In
September, Mauricio traveled to Spain with Lucia to give plenary
talks at two conferences and a talk at the U. Politècnica de
Catalunya. In Valencia, Mauricio and Lucia were hosted by Rafael and
Mila while in Barcelona by Elena Fernández. Elena took them on a
wonderful day trip to visit the Dali museum in Figueres and to
surrounding towns, including Girona and Pals. In Barcelona, Mauricio
and Lucia also had dinner twice with Helena Ramalhinho and her husband
Victor.

We
had a number of visitors this year.
Ricardo Silva, who was a visiting
post-doc from Brazil, returned home after working with Mauricio for
18 months. His wife Flávia went back home a month earlier.
Lucia’s
schoolmate Marina and husband Roberto spent an afternoon with us in
February.
In March brothers João Lauro and Lelio Facó spent a few
weeks with us. After Lelio returned to Rio, João Lauro traveled
with Mauricio to Florida to attend a conference at the U. of Florida
in Gainesville.
Also in March our friends from Spain Rafael, Mila,
and Abraham visited and Mauricio got to cook a lemon risotto with
sage chicken for them.
Renalva visited us twice this year: April-May
and December.
In July, José Gonçalves spent 10 days and Ricardo Silva one month vwith us.
Tuffy
Habib and Tania Querido came by New York in August to drop off Tania's
daughter at college and Mauricio drove to New York to meet them.
Lelio Facó and Paula Falci visited us in October and
December. Paula is a model and Lelio was shooting her photo book in
New Jersey and New York.
Finally, Celso Ribeiro spent two weeks with
us in December.

Mauricio’s
mom Renalva arrived in New Jersey on December 8th to spend the
holidays and her 80th birthday on February 2nd.
Alec came home for Christmas from
Pittsburgh on December 12th and Sasha on December 23rd.

We
look forward to a great 2011. Lucia will travel to Argentina for
tango dancing. Mauricio has many trips planned for 2011,
including Russia, Greece, and Australia. He and Lucia plan to
visit Venice and Florence in July. We hope to see you in 2011, too.
