Alec turned 19 on August 3rd. He started his sophomore year at the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in September. In the spring semester he went through a rite of passage for CMU CS students, a course called Great Theoretical Ideas in Computer Science, which they were told during orientation in 2009 would be the hardest course they would ever take in their lives.

After traveling to Brazil for a month for vacation with his parents and sister, Alec spent three weeks in the Ukraine on a National Science Foundation funded International Research Experience for Students (IRES) program at the Glushkov Institute of Cybernetics in Kiev. He also attended a conference on network science in Yalta, on the Crimean Peninsula, where he celebrated his 19th birthday on August 3rd. Alec goes to the UkraineAlec's havianas in the Ukraine

Alec's new dorm apartment at CMUAlec and Mauricio on CMU campusAt CMU, Alec moved to a very big new dorm room for his Sophomore year.  Besides studying a lot, he plays music and competes in intramural soccer. He is looking forward to taking a course on computer music in the spring 2011 semester.
