Friends
Another year has gone by and we are back to share with you what we were up to in 2013. Here are some highlights. We commemorated 20 years living in Holmdel, New Jersey. Alec graduated from Carnegie Mellon University and got a job in New York City. He now lives in Brooklyn. Sasha continues to work in Manhattan and moved to a new apartment in Brooklyn with her childhood friend Debbie Chung. The four of us traveled to Brazil to see the FIFA Confederations Cup. Lucia and Mauricio celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary. Lucia continues to work at AT&T and loves to dance tango. She traveled to Buenos Aires in September for a week of dancing. Mauricio moved to a new office in Middletown, New Jersey. This is the first time in 25 years that he actually works close to home. He traveled to many places around the world. As usual we had many friends visiting us this past year.

turned 26 on December 31st. She has been working at Teach
for America in New
York City since graduating from the University
of Michigan in 2010. This year she got the big promotion she wanted. She now is an Admissions Operations & Logistics Associate and is very happy with her new role.

with Debbie Chung, a friend from back in grade school, about four miles from Alec's apartment, also in Brooklyn.

June/July, Sasha traveled to Rio with Mauricio, Lucia and Alec with the objective of watching the FIFA Confederations Cup. Besides going to see Spain and Tahiti live in Maracanã Stadium, she watched several matches on TV. In Brazil, she saw her two grandmothers, Renalva and Maria Ignez, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

June, the four of us traveled to Rio. Mauricio and Alec traveled together a few days before Sasha and Lucia. Alec had not been to Brazil in over three years.
Mauricio had bought tickets for all FIFA
Confederations Cup matches in Rio only to find out, upon arriving at the airport and picking up the tickets, that the final match was not included in the package. By then tickets for the final had sold out.

early May, Mauricio traveled to Monterrey,
Mexico, for the Ph.D. defense of his student Luis Morán-Mirabal at the Monterrey

| Right after returning from Mexico, Mauricio traveled to Pittsburgh for Alec's graduation and then to Ischia Island in Italy for the 8th International Workshop on Hybrid Metaheuristics, where he gave a plenary
talk.

Ischia, Mauricio finally got to meet Paola and Gianni's triplets. That was something! By the end of the trip the girls were his friends.
After the Ischia workshop, Mauricio traveled with Paola Festa and her family to Avellino, a city about 40 minutes east of Naples by car, where they live.
From there Mauricio and Paola commuted to Naples where worked on a paper with her student Daniele.

so much work-related travel, Mauricio traveled on vacation to Rio in June with Alec. Lucia and Sasha arrived five days later. The first three days he and Alec spent time with Renalva in Itaipava.
Having rented an apartment one minute by foot from Copacabana Beach, we got to see more of Copacabana then we normally do when we visit Rio.

| For
over a year, Mauricio knew that the Florham Park lab where he had worked for over 16 years would shut down. Having the choice to move to Bedminster, New York City, or Middletown, Mauricio first considered moving to Bedminster because most of the algorithms & optimization people would be there. However, in May the algorithms & optimization group, where Mauricio has worked the last 25 years, was dismantled and its members spread over three departments. Mauricio was assigned to the network evolution research group whose members mostly work in the Middletown lab near our home.
In August, Mauricio decided to move to that lab in Middletown.

September, Mauricio traveled to Brazil for the third time in 2013. He organized an invited session with his former Ph.Ds and Post-Docs at the Brazilian
Operations Research Symposium in Natal.
On his way to Natal, he spent a weekend in Itaipava with his mom. Patricia and Jayme (former Escola
Americana classmates of Mauricio) also spent the weekend. Christine spent a day with her son Nicolas and grandson Thiago. |

he returned from Natal, Mauricio spent a weekend at his mother's place in Itaipava. She organized a 90th birthday anniversary party for her sister-in-law, Heloisa, who flew in from Maceió.
Mauricio's cousins Glayds (Heloisa's daughter) and Mônica (with husband Carlos Mario) came from Porto
Alegre and RIo, respectively.
Mauricio's sister-in-law, Maureen, and nieces Alexia (with boyfriend Pedro) and Dominique also came up from Rio and we had a wonderful weekend.

June through August Mauricio hosted Marina Lucena as a summer intern at AT&T Labs Research. Marina is a computer science major at PUC Rio and is daughter of Abilio Lucena and Anna Leão. Abilio was a college classmate of Mauricio's at PUC Rio in the 70s. Marina spent a year at NYU and AT&T Labs as a Science

marked the year that our dear friend Linda Rhodes moved from Holdmel to New Hampshire. We know Linda since our sons were in first grade and played rec soccer together. We will miss her and surely will visit NH when the weather improves. |

a sad note, Mauricio lost two good friends this year.
K.G. (Ram) Ramakrishnan worked with Mauricio at Bell Labs from 1987 to 1997. He was one of the most interesting persons Mauricio has ever met. Ram passed
away in March in New Hampshire where he had lived for the past few years.
Mauricio knew Arne Lokketangen since the 1994
ISMP meeting in Ann Arbor. Since then, they they probably met at tens if not hundreds of conferences. Any conference Mauricio would attend, Arne was sure to be there and it was always fun to be around him. Arne passed away in June doing what he liked to do, attending the Tristan VIII meeting in Chile.
