	We continue living in Holmdel, New Jersey. Here are some photos we took around our house in 2008.

	Sasha finished her sophomore year at U. of Michigan in Ann Arbor in April, stayed for the Spring quarter (May-June) to take a couple of courses, and started her junior year in September. From January to June of 2009, she will study abroad in Madrid, Spain.

	Sasha came home from college frequently: in February for winter break, in April for spring break, in July and August for summer vacation, in October for fall break, in November for Thanksgiving, and in December for the holidays. Mauricio, Lucia, and Alec traveled a few times to Ann Arbor. In March, Mauricio and Alec went by car while Lucia flew (tight on vacation days) to visit her. Then in April, Mauricio and Lucia traveled 629 miles from Holmdel to Ann Arbor to help Sasha move out of the apartment she was sharing with Grace and Jessica and move into the apartment she was going to share with only with Jessica. In August, Lucia spent a weekend with Sasha helping her unpack her stuff and move back into the apartment. Finally, in December, Mauricio and Alec drove to Michigan to help Sasha move her stuff out of the apartment and into a storage (she will be in Spain in 2009) and brought her back to New Jersey.

Sasha worked as an arts writer for the Michigan Daily, as an intern at a National Quality Research Center in Ann Arbor, and at the clothing store Urban Outfitters during the summer. She also wrote some pieces in Tiny Mix Tapes. Read some of her work at the Michigan Daily here.		During finals, Lucia always prepares a care pack for Sash, full of goodies.

	Alec had a busy year in 2008. His main activities included playing bass and guitar in his bands, playing on his soccer team, the Torpedoes, preparing and taking the SAT, and applying to a bunch of colleges. He visited Cornell University and Carnegie Mellon University with Mauricio in March. In August, he visited Columbia University.

In March, Lucia suprised Alec at the Detroit airport. Mauricio and Alec were driving to Arbor to visit Sasha and Mauricio told Alec we had to stop at the Detroit airport to pick up a box Lucia was sending to Sasha. Alec was really happy to see his mom. Sasha was surpised, too, since she was just expecting the boys.

	Alec continued his love affair with music. He played with his bands on several occasions throughout the year. At home, playing the guitar is one of hi favorite passtimes. Hear him playing guitar in the group Science Experiment. Alec got his driver's license in September. After that, it was hard to convince him to take the bus to school.

	Alec continued playing soccer for the Torpedoes. He began the year breaking his collarbone in a game Staton Island, NYC. The only positive things he got out ot this injury was the fact that he scored a goal half a second before getting hit on the shoulder and that he had more time to prepare for the SAT. The injury kept him away from the ball for about 10 weeks. In the summer, the Torpedoes competed in the Rider Cup, an annual premiere-level soccer tournament. The Torpedoes came out champions and the semi-final and final matches were decided on penalty kick. Alec was the only boy on his team who scored his PK in both games.

A big chunck of Alec's time and effort this year was dedicated to college planning. Besides visiting Cornell, CMU, and Columbia, Alec took two SAT prep courses. The first was at Kaplan where he prepared for the March SAT. Then he enrolled in private classes focused on the reading and writing portions of the SAT, which he took in June. Alec still spent time preparing for the SAT Math Level II subject test in November and the SAT Physics subject test, which he took in December. Perhaps what took most time were his college applications. Alec wants to study computer science and because there are so many good schools, he applied to 18 schools. So far he has heard back from only one, Rutgers University. He was admitted. He should know where is will be going by April.

	Alec did some work in the summer. He volunteered at a food pantry near Holmdel and implemented and deployed a website for our friend Silvia Barandier in August.

	Lucia continues to work at AT&T as a network architect. This year she started taking ballroom dancing lessons. Mauricio still hasn't started going with her but tells her that he soon will.

		Lucia accompanied Mauricio to the AIRO 2008 conference in Ischia, Italy in September. After the conference, they spent on e day in Capri and one evening in Rome.

Our best friends Marina and Sergio are no longer together. In August, they sold their home in Chatham and moved to New York. Lucia and Mauricio went to Chatham in late August for a final goodbye to a place where we had a lot of fun over the last years. Sergio's new apartment is in the upper east side of Manhattan. Lucia and Mauricio got to see it in August. Marina's new apartment is near the site of the World Trade Center. Lucia and Mauricio visited her in October. That day, they had lunch at the restaurant Industria Argentina. To our surprise, Lucia's childhood friend Nicole Albertal was also having lunch there.

	In March, Lucia traveled to Rio by herself to spend ten days with her mom, brother, and sisters. Sister Ana Lucia flew from Santa Catarina to meet her in Rio.

The big wedding on 2008 was Xanda and Eric's. Xanda is the daugther of our friends Marina and Sergio and we've followed her steps for the last 18 years: junior high, high school, college at UC Berkeley (go Bears!) , medical school at Tufts, psychiatry residence at Columbia, and now her wedding. The rehearsal dinner as well as the wedding ceremony and reception were unforgettable.

	Lucia and Mauricio celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary on August 16th.

		Mauricio still works as a researcher at AT&T Labs Research. Mauricio's work continued taking him around the world to interesting places. In February, he traveled to Toronto to give a talk at the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences. He spent a day at McMaster University hosted by Antoine Deza.

In March, Mauricio traveled to the University of Maryland in College Park, MD to participate in the INFORMS Telecommunications Conference.

In April, Mauricio traveled to Destin,, in the Florida pan handle, to attend a conference on Sensors (Theory, Algorithms, and Applications) orgainzed by Panos Pardalos, Yinyu Ye, Clayton Commander, and Vladmir Boginski.

	In early May, Mauricio traveled to Iowa City, where he gve a talk at the Univerity of Iowa Business School. Mauricio's host was Jeffrey Ohlmann. In late May, Mauricio traveled to Provincetown, on the tip of Cape Cod, Massachusetts to take part in the Workshop on Experimental Algorithms (WEA 2008) .

	In July, Mauricio traveled to Johannesburg, South Africa, to attend IFORS 2008, the 18th Triennial Conference of the Federation of Operational Research Socieites in Standton. This was Mauricio's first trip to Africa.

	On July 27th, Mauricio turned 53. To celebrate, we had a feijoada for over 30 people.

	For three weeks, starting August 8th, Mauricio would either stay up really late or get up really early to watch the Beijing Games live.

		In September, Mauricio traveled with Lucia to Ischia in Italy where he gave a plenary talk at the Annual Conference of the Italian Operational Research Society (AIRO 2008). Paola Festa was his host.

	Earlier in September, Mauricio's brother Marcio, who is a musician and lives in Fortaleza, Brazil came to perform in New York City, It had been over 17 years since he was last in the U.S.

	On September 24th, Mauricio got a call from his mother Renalva while driving home from work with the terrible news of the unexpected death of his 49-year old brother Roberto in Fortaleza, Brazil. Within one hour of arriving home, Mauricio was on his way to Newark International airport. He flew to Rio, met his mother, Roberto's wife Maureen, and two of his three children Thomas and Dominique at the Rio de Janeiro airport and flew with them to Fortaleza for the funeral. To celebrate Roberto's life, Mauricio created a website.

After returning to Rio, Mauricio met Lucia who traveled to Rio for Roberto's requiem mass. The church, Igreja Nossa Senhora da Paz, was packed with friends and family. Mauricio and Lucia spent a few days in Itaipava, where his mother lives. In Itaipava, they spent time with Mauricio's cousins Loala and Moana and his aunt Rubinete. Roberto's son Thomas and girlfriend Viviane came to Itaipava for a couple of days.

		In October., Mauricio traveled to Washington, D.C. to give a tutorial talk at the Annual Meeting of INFORMS.

In November, Mauricio traveled to Gainesville, Florida, to give two talks at the University of Florida and work with Panos Pardalos. Mauricio's post-doc, Ricardo Silva, came along.

	This year we had many visitors. Luciana Pessôa, a Ph.D. student of Celso Ribeiro from Rio de Janeiro, came to work with Mauricio from January to April. Lucia's cousin Angela from Rio de Janeiro, along with her husband Ricardo, spent a week with us in April.

	Celso Ribeiro, from Rio de Janeiro, spent 10 days with us in May working with Mauricio. Paola Festa from Avellino, Italy, spent a week with us before and a week after going to the WEA 2008 conference in Cape Cod with Mauricio in May.

	Ricardo Silva, from Lavras, Brazil, arrived in June to spend 12-18 months working with Mauricio as a post-doc scholar. His wife, Flavia, came along, too.

Luciana Buriol, from Porto Alegre, Brazil, spent two weeks working with Mauricio in July. She helped Lucia organize Mauricio's birthday party. In September, Rafael Martí from Valencia, Spain, and his wife Mila Soler spent a week in New Jersey. Rafael was working with Mauricio, Ricardo, and Abraham Duarte. Mila would join us for lunch every day.

Abraham Duarte from Madrid, spent amost two month working with Mauricio and Ricardo at AT&T Research. During the Christmas holidays, Lucia's cousin Paulinho and girlfriend Fernanda from São Paulo and Lucia's sister Ana Lucia and her fiancee Paulo stayed with us.

		As they have done since Sasha was five, Mauricio and Sasha spent a day in New York City during the week between Christmas and New Year's Day.
